One of the farm cats who has already successfully reared a litter of 3 kittens this year- turned up with another 4 yesterday. They are only a couple of weeks old and still have their eyes closed. She brought them out from her den where ever that is and made a nest for them in the long grass behind my house and spent most of the day there with them nursing and washing them.
However when she took them back inside last night - she left one of them out in the grass on its own ! I didn't want to move it incase she came back so I put an old towel in the nest and covered it with a piece of cardbard and hoped she would return.
But I'm afraid this morning it was still there mewing pathetically. I fed the mother cat and while she was eating i put the kitten right next to her and she did let it suckle momentarily but then abandoned it again. I put it back in the nest - but it has since died.
I don't know why she decided to reject this one. she has been a good mother to her previous 2 litters though they were only litters of 3 and 2 kittens - did she think she couldn't rear 4 of them and this was the weakest - or did she know something was wrong with it maybe? . No sign of the other 3 today - its been raining all day and I suppose she has kept them inside one of the barns.
